Zip Zap Zing Childrens Theatre Company was created in order to bring the excitement of the performing arts to kids in northern Lake County and to encourage children to develop a love for theatre and all its wonder, as well as build acting skills.
ZZZ’s founder Melonie Johnson earned her B.A. in English and Theatre and has over 10 years of experience in dramatic education for children that includes such diverse assignments as designing and instructing a summer theatre program for 500+ youngsters to directing Shakespeare for high school kids. Melonie has worked all over Lake and Northern Cook County for such companies as Lake Forest Childrens Theatre Co. and DramaKids. She taught Theatre and English at Warren Township High School in Gurnee, and directed a variety of plays at the high school, as well as coaching for the school’s very successful speech team.
A full time Mama to two young girls of her own and a homeschooler, Melonie began looking for drama programs in her area that met the needs of her demanding criteria as well as her pocketbook. After a frustrating search, she decided to start Zip Zap Zing, named after one of her favorite improv games.
As a child, she loved acting out all sorts of stories, and would perform plays in her backyard for whomever in the neighborhood she could sweet talk into being an audience member. Back then, getting involved in a program like ZipZapZing would have been a dream come true. By developing this company and its curriculum, she hopes the opportunities it offers makes that dream a reality for your child.
